Air Defense Identification Zone [r]: At the most generic, an area in which security authority make special requirements for identification and access of aircraft; most often the 200-mile zone, similar to an ocean Exclusive Economic Zone, from a nation's coast, beyond its coastal waters, to a point in space — unidentified aircraft in this area may be intercepted by fighters and turned away, or fired upon, if considered a threat; controversial when applied to intelligence collection aircraft that do not present an immediate threat
