Brunch is an increasingly-popular midday meal. The word brunch, a portmanteau, (Breakfast + Lunch) was coined late in the 19th Century and was original a late-morning meal, as in a late breakfast or an early lunch. Since then, its usage has expanded. A weekend brunch, normally on Sundays and usually with a special menu, is now a fixture at many trendy restaurants in big cities, particularly in the United States.
Brunch may include any number of breakfast and lunch items, but there are some dishes that have become ubiquitous. Among these are the mimosa, a drink made from sparkling wine and orange juice and Eggs Benedict, made from poached eggs over bacon on a muffin, served with hollandaise sauce.
