Richard Bernstein, a journalist, writes the "Letter from America" column in the International Herald Tribune. He was daily book critic for the New York Times (1995-2002), as well as United Nations and Paris bureau chiefs, and national cultural correspondent. He was Time's first Beijing bureau chief.
After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut, summa cum laude in 1966, he studied History and East Asian Languages at Harvard University receiving a master's degree in Chinese Setudies, becoming a part-time writer for the Washington Post while on fieldwork in Asia.
His books have dealt with China and France, and more general issues such as multiculturalism, jihad and sexuality.
